What is the difference between open-admission and restricted-admission degree courses?

In a restricted-admission degree course:

  • Candidates must take an admission test and their scores will be used to create a ranking
  • Only a limited number of candidates can be allowed to enrol

Please bear in mind that taking a TOLC does not mean securing a position in the ranking and applying for a degree course. To apply, please follow the procedures set out by the university in the admission notice.

In an open-admission degree course:

  • There is no restriction on the number of candidates that can enrol
  • An entrance-level assessment can be required.

The type of assessment required is stated in the admission notice of your degree course or on the university website.

How can I enrol in an Italian degree course?

Check the admission notice of your degree course or your university website, where the steps you must follow to enrol are outlined.

If you need help or have any doubts, please contact the International Student Office of your university.

I'm interested in more than one degree course: where can I find the information needed to make a thoughtful choice?

First of all, browse the university website to learn about the available degree courses.

In this way, you can find out what each university has to offer and see which courses have the subjects you like and are most interested in.

If you need help or have any doubts, please contact the International Student Office of your university.

Besides the TOLCs, are there other types of admission tests?

The TOLC is one of the types of tests that universities use for admission to their degree courses.

To find out which test is required, you need to check the admission notice of your degree course on the university website.

If you need help or have any doubts, please contact the International Student Office of your university.

What if I have not attended high school in Italy? Can I book a TOLC anyway

No matter which country you attended high school in, you can book your TOLC.

Please contact the International Student Office of your university for information on your high school diploma validity and the application procedure.

How often can I take a TOLC?

You can take the same type of TOLC once every calendar month.

You can take different types of TOLC in the same calendar month.

From the day after your TOLC, you will be able to book another TOLC of the same type for the next calendar month. This means that you can choose the earliest available date: the TOLC you want to book can take place less than 30 days after the TOLC you have taken.

Can I use the same TOLC result to apply for more than one degree course or to different universities?
What is the minimum score required to apply?

Where can I find my TOLC results?

You will find your TOLC results in the Test results section of your CISIA Student Area.

If you have taken a TOLC@HOME, your results will be available after 48 hours starting from 7 PM (Italian time zone).

In the Test results section, you will find:

  • The Attendance pdf
  • The Performance file containing the number of unanswered questions, correct and incorrect answers divided by subject
  • The Results pdf stating your score.

Does taking a TOLC mean applying for a degree course?

Taking a TOLC does not mean applying for a degree course.

You must always meet the deadlines and procedures stated in the admission notice.

Where and when will the ranking be released?

The ranking for a resticted-admission degree course is published on the university website.

Please note that taking a TOLC does not mean being included in the ranking.

To be included in the ranking and to know how and when it will be published, please refer to the enrolment procedure set out in the admission notice of your degree course.

Can I use the same TOLC result to apply for more than one degree course or to different universities?

You can use the same TOLC result to apply for every degree course that requires that type of TOLC for admission, even in a different university from the one that held your TOLC.

If you are interested in more than one degree course, please refer to each admission notice for details on the enrolment procedure and deadlines.

You can find the admission notice on the university website.

What is the minimum score required to apply?

Check the admission notice of your degree course: if required, the minimum score is set by the university. Minimum scores can vary from university to university.

In the admission notice you find:

  • the minimum score required to enrol without being assigned an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA: Obbligo Formativo Aggiuntivo), if you are interested in an open-admission degree course
  • the minimum score required to be eligible for the ranking, if you are interested in a restricted-admission degree course.

What is an OFA: Obbligo Formativo Aggiuntivo?

An OFA is an Additional Learning Requirement that can be assigned to applicants by universities.

Whether you are interested in an open-admission or a restricted-admission degree course, if your TOLC score doesn’t reach the threshold set by the university, you may be assigned an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA).

OFAs are mea knowledge or skills. Each university degree course defines what these obligations imply: for instance, taking another test, revising specific topics with additional studying material, or being required to pass specific exams before moving on to the second year.

If you need help or have any doubts, please contact the International Student Office of your university.
